20.08.10 EFA strongly condemns Sarkozy’s Roma deportation policy. (20/08/2010)
EFA calls the European institutions and the French political parties and citizens to take action against this kind of policies.
The operation that aims to deport hundreds of Roma people (to Romania) as a part of a “cleaning” of illegal camps in the country by the end of August, is deliberately stigmatizing a generally law-abiding section of society, the Roma, to win support among right-wing voters.
Regarding the issue EFA’s spokesman, M. Günther Dauwen said that “France is undergoing an intolerable resurgence of racism and xenophobia. Mr. Sarkozy has targeted the Roma people living in France in order to distract the attention from its own failures and corruption scandals. In a moment when he fears very bad results for the elections of 2012, this measure is a strong strategic tool in order to stop the current decrease of popularity by conquering the rightist and populist votes. It is nothing but a dirty and contemptible UMP electoral strategic movement”.
The European Free Alliance -EFA- strongly condemns this operation and calls for French political parties and citizens to take action and demand the government to stop this kind of policies.
In this same line, the EFA believes that Europe is not free of responsibility and requests the European Institutions to strongly respond to this blunt attack against the human rights of the Roma people, and hopes that immediate action will be taken in order to redirect this issue towards a new situation where Romany people will be granted their full rights and respect.
